Bill Paying

Back when I was tighter on cash flow I paid bills as close to the due date as practical. But now that I have more cash lying around I’ve been paying them whenever I think to check on my money. That is to say, if the statement is ready I go ahead and pay the bill, even if it’s not due for another 2-3 weeks.

Clearly I could make a little more interest by waiting to pay the bill, but I think I’ve decided I’ll keep paying whatever’s been invoiced just so I don’t end up paying something late because I wait another 2-4 weeks before checking on bills again.

My Electric Usage the Last 3 Years

My first year in this apartment I had a rate deal, but the two times I’ve renewed I was ambivalent about how long I was staying in the apartment, so I’ve been paying floating monthly rates since due to procrastination and indecision.

I recall my bills didn’t always go over $100 at first, but lately they always do, and the past few months they’re nuts. I never looked closely enough to know if it’s usage or rates that’s more responsible. But I pulled up my usage history. The first two years look pretty consistent, and I presume December 2009 is when I left the door open for a week while out of town, but since then every month but April has been relatively high.

If it weren’t for April 2010 being the 3rd-lowest month of the past three years I’d think something was going haywire in here. As it is I suppose the weather has just been colder then hotter than usual.

So I guess my answer is that both rates and usage have gone up.

(I wonder what happened to January 09?)

I suppose it should be noted that from April 2008 through October 2009 I generally spent more time traveling for work than at home, but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference.

What’s worse is I’m still very ambivalent about staying here. My lease is up at the end of September, and I vaguely want to move but have no compelling reasons to, just minor things like not getting good TV reception here and traffic annoyances (but there’s really no getting away from them).

Over the past few months I’ve flip-flopped between job security paranoia and a desire to hoard money and wanting to buy a house and start spending more money in leisure pursuits. And I really hate making big money decisions when I’ve been flip-flopping like that.

Amazon MP3

I’ve gone years without buying music. I was ticked off at the music industry for suing their own customers, jacking up CD prices and complaining they’re losing money. And for a while the only music downloads were restricted use.

Well, there are a few newer songs I like, and the current playlist of my radio stations is annoying me, and at least twice a day I’m finding the same song on two different stations and occasionally three stations simultaneously.

So I did a quick check on whether restriction-free MP3 purchases are available now. Yup, from Amazon, and they have an app I can use on my Droid. I can download them on the PC and transfer them to the Droid, also, but it’s nice to be able to buy on the go and then copy it back to the PC.

So I spent $10-$20 today on music that I can play on any of my devices and as many devices as I want. Now I just need a better way of playing them in the car.

I guess I shouldn’t complain. My car will play MP3′s off of a CD, but for some reason they omitted the aux jack. Newer Hyundai’s have them.

The FM transmitters give poor sound quality.

My brother has an aftermarket stereo with a USB jack on the front…just stick in a USB drive with MP3′s and off it goes.

Update: Amazon has been emailing me multiple times a day for a while, and it’s really getting on my nerves. Apparently when signing up for MP3 or Kindle or VOD it reactivated all the categories for “hey, look at this stuff you can buy”. At least I have it turned off again. It was really hounding me about car audio deals since I bought the mounting kit.

Verizon Wireless Femtocell Network Extender

My apartment is down a hill and gets bad reception. There’s only one spot in my apartment where I can get somewhat reliable cell signal. While searching accessory reviews and prices I found Verizon also sells a “network extender” (femtocell) which hooks into your broadband and gives you your own private mini cell tower. They were priced at $200, but I was hoping my corporate discount would apply. It didn’t, but they have a $100 rebate right now, so I got one.

Interestingly the femtocell has a GPS receiver built in, so it needs to be able to see the GPS satellites even though it’s an indoor device. I placed it by a windowed door, and if found them in a few minutes. This particular one is tied to Verizon’s service and was pre-activated, so it just got on the broadband, found the GPS, and now I can go to my account on Verizon’s website and manage the cell. It has 4 channels, one reserved for anybody’s 911 use (complete with E911 GPS capability) and 3 available for general use. I can let anyone use it, or I can give up to 50 Verizon numbers priority use. I did that and put my number and some family on there. And I have really good signal throughout the apartment now. I expect that will be more beneficial when I get the Droid tomorrow. There is a brief dual tone whenever I start a call that lets me know I’m on the extender, and if I dial #48 a message repeats telling me I’m on my extender. The manual says it uses 120kps per active channel.

I’m torn between my having to improve their service in my little dip in the earth and at least having the ability to do so. It occurred to me they should put femtocells in all FiOS broadband routers; they might be able to do away with cell towers in many places.

I wandered out of range (apartment parking lot) of my femtocell while on a conference call, and the audio kept cutting out while on the main cell. When I came back in range it didn’t reconnect to my femtocell until about a minute after my call dropped from bad signal.

I’m not sure if that means in won’t hop to the femtocell while a call is in progress or if it just takes time.

A Rising Market Lifts All Spirits

I hadn’t checked on my money in a little while. It’s a really nice feeling when I have investments, no debt and the market is going up. You know, compared to when I had $20k-$30k debt and the market was going down.

Certainly I am no investing genius, but I feel like I’ve done and am doing something right.

And right now I have some money I need to figure out what to do with short term. I guess I’ll just stick it in a PenFed MM until I decide whether or not I’m buying a house this year.

PenFed CDs For Emergency Funds

When building an emergency fund I wondered where I should put the money. It needs to be very stable and have little or no possibility of losing value.

I looked into high-interest savings accounts like Emigrant Direct, ING Direct and HSBC Direct. For a while each had very competitive rates, but I personally don’t want to chase rates by moving my emergency funds around periodically, and over time these banks seem to become less competitive.

Money market mutual funds used to have decent returns, but lately they seem to be paltry.

Someone suggested PenFed CDs to me. PenFed (Pentagon Federal Credit Union) has fairly regularly had competitive CD returns, and their minimum CD is $1,000. The penalty for early withdrawal is generally 6 months or a year of interest depending on the term of the CD. Since my emergency fund target is around $10,000 I liked the idea of buying several $1k CDs for use as emergency funds. I have been doing this for a couple of years now and met my emergency funds goal. Today’s rates aren’t as good as two years ago of course, but they still beat savings accounts and money market mutual funds by far. And they won’t lose value and are insured by the NCUA, the credit union analog to the FDIC. I have a ladder of CDs earning more than my other secure options, and if I have to I can break them in increments of $1k to minimize the forfeited interest.

PenFed’s member requirements are to have been in the armed forces or have a family member who was, but you can also become eligible by buying a one-year membership in the National Military Family Association for $20.

Replacing Credit Cards

I got my PenFed cash reward card and Costco Amex and have activated and used both. I am using the Penfed for most everything. I haven’t been to Costco yet, and part of me wants to make sure it does work as my member card before I yank the member card out of my wallet.

I’m actually shying away from calling the card companies because I hate arguing with them and I know one or two of them are going to try to keep me on. Then again…

Chase Amazon closed my account! “In reviewing your account, we noticed that your account has been inactive for an extended period of time. We believe this may indicate that the account no longer meets your financial needs. With this in mind, the account has been closed.” Sounds suspiciously like “f you, you deadbeat” to me. I’m not going to worry about it much, but I heard that it’s somehow bad for your credit if the lender closes the account. I don’t see how if I’ve never had a balance on it except for $40 which I think I paid before the first statement so I wouldn’t forget. Okay, I’m done worrying about it.

Okay, so that leaves Discover, Wells Fargo MasterCard and Best Buy to close.

Now I have to remember where I’m keeping my unused credit cards so I can go cut them up.

This post is an update to Credit Card Threats

Credit Card Threats

Wells Fargo just sent me a letter saying if I don’t use my credit card by the end of October they’re going to lower my limit back to what it was before they increased it without asking me. Dumbasses.

Probably a coincidence, but I got this just a few days after checking all my unused card balances online. Every few months I do that just to make sure everything is sane. Then again I’m seeing articles that a lot of credit card issuers are doing all sorts of antics from strangling the weak to kicking out “deadbeats” like me.

My credit limit with Best Buy is $304 down from $3k sometime in the past couple of years. Why the $4 I wonder?

(Warning: babbling ahead)

I think I may do some culling now since they seem to all want to play, anyway. My only reservation was the credit rating thing and age of accounts. The least pain in the butt card has been my [company] Credit Union card, and I’ve been eyeing that PenFed card for a while. I think I’ll get rid of Best Buy, Wells Fargo MC, Chase Amazon Visa and Discover and pick up a PenFed rewards card and perhaps a Costco Amex since I’m going to Costco more often now and will be using a lot more gasoline for work.

The Best Buy card was nice for no-interest purchases on “large” items, but it takes all of 5 minutes to open a new account at any store, and I should be able to handle $1k – $2k purchases from now on, anyway. And I can’t think of any big purchases looming. And Best Buy hasn’t been good to its name for quite a few years now.

Discover I still hold a long-standing grudge with. For years I was too pissed at them to call them and speak to them long enough to cancel the card. I briefly used them again because they cold-called me and offered me 5% or so cash back on gasoline shortly before I was going to rent a U-Haul and drive all my possessions from Indianapolis to DFW. Other than that I’ve ignored them and haven’t activated a card. Although I might actually hang onto this if Sam’s Club still takes only Discover. It might be nice to have all the Costco plus all the Sam’s Club gas pumps available as I drive around town for work.

Chaze Amazon I only got because I got $40 off a purchase. I don’t think I’ve used it since. They haven’t done anything funny that I’ve noticed, but I just don’t trust a Delaware-based credit card company.

Wells Fargo I’m not even sure why I have. Until now they haven’t done anything funny, but it’s never been a particularly good card, nor particularly bad.

I have an Amex Blue carrying a balance at a 4% promotional rate, and I have a corporate Amex for work. (Apparently I have a no-limit corporate Amex which is apparently rare among my peers.) So another Amex may appear superfluous to a casual observer, but I don’t have an Amex available for personal purchases at Costco, so I’d like a Costco Amex, but I could continue to use my debit card there.

I do want at least a couple of credit cards available for unforseen needs like a big car repair or such, but for the short term I am not worried about any credit rating hit, and again I trust the credit union issued cards way more than bank-issued cards.

Ok, now I’m off to see if the Costco Amex is a credit card or just a charge card. I definitely want my [company] CU card and a PenFed CU card, but I’m not sure I want to deal with any twitchy banks now and not sure if I really need an Amex for Costco or a Discover for Sams. I do feel slightly uncomfortable with several open but unused accounts.
